The Delaware County SPCA is dedicated to
adoption,
intervention and prevention programs that protect and improve the
health and welfare
of
companion animals and support the people who care for them. As we
settle into our second year as a lifesaving organization, we strive to
save as many lives as possible by devoting our
resources to adoption, prevention, education and outreach
programs that:
Prevent animal cruelty and overpopulation
Place animals in caring homes
Promote responsible pet ownership through
education and low-cost vet care services and community partnerships
The Delco SPCA Adoption Center, open 7 days a week, seeks the best
diverse talent to further our lifesaving mission.
We are not currently
seeking any positions, but check back here for when we are!

History
The Delaware County Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(SPCA) was established in 1911 originally for the purpose of providing
watering troughs for work horses throughout the county. As the
county expanded to close to 560,000 people, many of them pet owners,
the Delaware County SPCA evolved to serve the ever-changing needs
of the growing
community. Until the end of 2011, the Delco SPCA served as an
“open-admission”
facility, receiving stray animals from the municipalities
in Delaware County that had animal control contracts. In 2012, the
Delaware County SPCA became a lifesaving
organization, striving to save every adoptable animal that enters our
Adoption Center, reserving euthanasia only for animals that are
incurably sick or too behaviorally aggressive to be adopted out in to
the community.
Placing deserving animals in loving homes is a continuous focus. In
2012, we placed over 3,100 homeless animals into forever homes. We
acquire
animals when owners can no longer care for
their pets and need to turn ownership over to us for adoption;
additionally, we care for animals from cruelty investigations. Finally,
we rescue adoptable animals from high-risk shelters and transfer them
to our Adoption Center to place up for adoption as our space and
resources persist. We are
not breed-specific and have a loyalty to "bully" breeds like Pit Bulls
and other misjudged breeds. We promote responsible ownership by
behaviorally evaluating our animals prior to adoption, and, in some
cases, including training with the adoption. The dedicated staff,
volunteers, and volunteer Board
members work constantly
to promote responsible pet ownership and combat animal
overpopulation through prevention programs such as low-cost public
spay/neuter, community programs like a pet food bank, low-cost vet
care, both onsite and offsite, humane education and humane
investigations.
The Delaware County SPCA is a 501c3 non-profit, charitable organization
registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State. We are not
affiliated with any local, state or federal agency or any other SPCA or
humane group. Our work is supported entirely by private
donations.
