What's A Foster?
Animals who are listed as “foster” with the SPCA are also available for adoption. The word “foster” beside the animal’s name designates an animal that is temporarily staying in a private residence with a foster family. Adoption requirements are the same for foster animals as for animals in residence at the Adoption Center, the only difference being that foster animals require the potential adopter to meet them via the foster family.

See the FAQS about adopting a foster pet.

What You Need
We want your visit with us to be a pleasant and successful one, which starts with your understanding that our total focus is on being able to return lost animals to their owners, and adopting the animals from our Adoption Center into loving homes.

Many of the animals in the SPCA today are available for adoption, while others are lost and unavailable for adoption for 4 days in the hopes that their owners will reclaim them. The card on the front of the animal’s cage will help you to ascertain the availability date of the animal.

If there is an animal you are interested in adopting, the adoption counselors will be happy to assist you with that process. The adoption screening will take approximately 20 minutes and requires the following information:
  • A driver’s license or a state-issued ID with your current address
  • Residency: The owner of the home must consent to the adoption of the animal. If you rent, we need to see a copy of your lease stating that you are allowed to have pets. If you own your home, please bring a copy of your deed, mortgage payment book or tax bill.
  • If you are planning to adopt a dog and presently have a dog(s), all dogs must meet.
  • Veterinary references, if applicable.
  • All members of the household must meet the animal.
  • An adoption application must be completed.
We welcome out-of-state and out-of-county adoptions. If you are not a Delaware County resident, the following additional requirements must be met:
  • Proof of home ownership or lease with pet allowance
Please note: All adoptions are at the discretion of the adoption counselors. If you have any questions about the animal(s) or the adoption procedure, the staff will be glad to assist you.

Once you adopt, we're sure you'll want to take your new pooch or kitty out on the town. Click here for a Pet Friendly Resources List, including pet-friendly rentals.

Surrendering Your Pet to the SPCA
Surrendering your pet to the SPCA is a personal decision that should not be taken lightly. With thousands of animals arriving each year, competition is high, and adopters want the healthiest and friendliest dogs and cats. Prior to relinquishing your pet, we recommend look into alternative arrangements, such as putting your pet in the care of a responsible and trustworthy family member or neighbor or doing further research to find housing that accepts pets and contacting local rescue groups. Click here for a list of pet-friendly resources, including pet-friendly housing. If the reason for relinquishing your pet is a medical reason, call our vet office at 610-566-1370, option 3, for low-cost veterinary services. Or call our front desk at 610-566-1370 x0 for rescue information.

Owners ask that we love and care for their pet like they do, and we will happily do so, with their help. First, please make an appointment prior to bringing your animal to the Adoption Center. Call 610-566-1370 x0. Appointments are required and those who arrive without an appointment will be turned away. When you do arrive at your scheduled time, you should be prepared to help by bringing all papers relevant to your pet's veterinary history, especially with regard to vaccinations and spay/neuter. Include names and contact information for any veterinarians who have seen your pet. Having your dog or cat spayed or neutered and brought up-to-date with all vaccines will also increase the chance we will be able to accept your pet right away. We will ask for you to make a donation surrender fee toward the care of your pet while they are at the SPCA:
  • In-tact cats and dogs not up-to-date on vaccines or without proof of vaccines: $50
  • In-tact cats and dogs with proof of vaccines OR altered cats and dogs without proof of vaccines: $30
When you bring in your pet after making your appointment (by calling 610-566-1370 x0), you will be given the opportunity to fill out a personality profile describing your animal. What you say can make a tremendous difference! Being truthful about your animal's temperament and medical needs will help us find the right home and will protect you from any possible liability. Please remember to bring your driver's license showing your current address.
