Pets of the Week
Pet of the week #1
Dominique
Sex: Female
Breed: Norwich Terrier blend
Age: Young
ID: 33790
If this little girl can’t make you smile, then I don’t know what will! Dominique is a beautiful Norwich terrier blend with a super cute face and big lovable ears that will make you chuckle. She has a wiry tan coat with a charcoal muzzle. Her temperament seems to be mild but, she is a terrier, so you can expect her to have an active side, too! Dominique gets along fine with cats, and she can go home with slightly older children. She definitely knows how to work her ears, in that “adopt me” puppy face way! If you are interested in this little princess, come by and check her out!

Pet of the week #2
Spaz
Sex: Male
Breed: DSH Black & White
Age: Baby
ID: 33063
This little guy’s story will break your heart. Spaz came to us as a lost Christmas kitten back on December 23rd. Now the seasons are changing, and Spaz is getting to be a big boy as he approaches 6 months of age, but he still hasn’t found his forever home! Spaz is “growing up” at the center, when he really needs to be growing up with his forever family. Don't let the name fool you, Spaz is everything a young kitty should be; he’s extremely playful, very curious and super friendly and he is well-behaved, too! Spaz can live with cats and dogs and older children! He is a staff favorite, and because of that, half of his adoption fee has been paid by a sponsor. Spaz is also Trader Joe’s Pet of the week, so besides getting a great new friend, Spaz’s adopter will also receive a free bag of Kitty food, courtesy of Trader Joe’s in Media. So come out and make friends with Spaz, he’ll surely steal your heart!

What's A Foster?
Animals who are listed as “foster” with the SPCA are also available for adoption. The word “foster” beside the animal’s name designates that the animal is currently residing in a private residence with a foster family. Adoption requirements are the same for foster animals as for animals in residence at the Adoption Center, the only difference being that foster animals require the potential adopter to meet them via the foster family.

See the FAQS about adopting a foster pet.

What You Need
We want your visit with us to be a pleasant and successful one, which starts with your understanding that our total focus is on being able to return lost animals to their owners, and adopting the animals from our Adoption Center into loving homes.

Many of the animals in the SPCA today are available for adoption, while others are lost and unavailable for adoption for 4 days – hoping that their owners will reclaim them. The card on the front of the animal’s cage will help you to ascertain the availability of the animal.

If there is an animal you are interested in adopting, the adoption councilors will be happy to assist you with that process. The adoption screening will take approximately 20 minutes and requires the following information:
  • A driver’s license or some form of photo identification with your current address
  • Residency - Do you own your home or do you rent it? We always need to check with the owners of the property to be sure that the animal will be welcome. If you live in an apartment, we need to see a copy of your lease stating that you are allowed to have pets. If you own your home, please bring a copy of your deed, mortgage payment book or tax bill.
  • What other animals are currently living in the household?
  • All adopters must provide a veterinary reference. If an adopter can not provide a veterinary reference the animal may be held for spay/neuter at the discretion of the adoptions staff.
  • All family members living in the home are required to meet the animal prior to adoption approval.
  • If you are planning to adopt a dog and presently have a dog, both dogs must meet.
If you are not a Delaware County resident, the following additional requirements must be met:
  • Proof of home ownership or lease with pet allowance
  • A veterinarian history or letter of recommendation from your vet to show neutering and responsible pet ownership
  • If you are planning to adopt a dog and presently have a dog, both dogs must meet.
  • We welcome out of state adoptions; however, you will be limited to choosing an animal that is already spayed/neutered.
Please note-all adoptions are at the discretion of the adoption councilors. If you have any questions about the animals or the adoption procedure, the staff will be glad to assist you.

Surrendering Your Pet to the SPCA
Surrendering your pet to the SPCA is a personal decision that should not be taken lightly. With 8,000 animals arriving each year competition is high, and adopters want the healthiest and friendliest dogs and cats. We will gladly accept your pet if we can, but you should look into alternative arrangements such as putting your pet in the care of a responsible and trustworthy family member or neighbor, doing further research to find housing that accepts pets and contacting local rescue groups. In the end, if you feel you must bring your pet to us, you should be prepared to help out by bringing us all papers relevant to your pet's veterinary history, especially with regard to vaccinations and spay/neuter. Include names and contact information for any veterinarians who have seen your pet. Having your dog or cat spayed or neutered and brought up to date with all vaccines will also increase the chance we will be able to accept your pet right away. We also encourage you to make a sizeable donation toward the care of your pet while they are at the SPCA. When you bring in your pet you will be given the opportunity to fill out a personality profile describing your animal. What you say can make a tremendous difference! Being truthful about your animal's temperament and medical needs will help us find the right home and will protect you from any possible liability. Please remember to bring your driver's license showing your current address.
