What You Need
We want your visit with us to be a pleasant and successful one, which starts with your understanding that our total focus is on being able to return lost animals to their owners, and adopting the animals in our shelter into loving homes.

Many of the animals in the shelter today are available for adoption, while others are lost and unavailable for adoption for 4 days – hoping that their owners will reclaim them. The card on the front of the animal’s cage will help you to ascertain the availability of the animal.

If there is an animal you are interested in adopting, the shelter staff will assist you with that process. The adoption screening will take approximately 20 minutes and the screening includes gathering some of the following information:
  • A driver’s license or some form of photo identification with your current address
  • Residency - Do you own your home or do you rent it? We always need to check with the owners of the property to be sure that the animal will be welcome. If you live in an apartment, we need to see a copy of your lease stating that you are allowed to have pets. If you own your home, please bring a copy of your deed, mortgage payment book or tax bill.
  • What other animals are currently living in the household?
  • All adopters must provide a veterinary reference. If an adopter can not provide a veterinary reference the animal may be held for spay/neuter at the discretion of the shelter adoptions staff.
If you are not a Delaware County resident, the following additional requirements must be met:
  • Proof of home ownership or lease with pet allowance
  • A veterinarian history or letter of recommendation from your vet to show neutering and responsible pet ownership
  • If you are planning to adopt a dog and presently have a dog, both dogs must meet.
Please note-all adoptions are at the discretion of the adoption clerks. If you have any questions about the animals or the adoption procedure, the shelter staff will be glad to assist you.
